Our Story

The Alsen community was founded in 1872 by an agency of the United States Department of War known as the Freedmen's Bureau designed to help freedmen in the aftermath of the American Civil War. (Courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System).

The Alsen St. Irma Lee community village is a passionate and dedicated nonprofit organization committed to addressing issues of environmental injustice. Guided by the principles of equity, sustainability, and fairness. The Alsen community village strives to provide the tools and  knowledge needed to empower the community, while promoting environmental education and awareness.

At the heart of the mission is the recognition that communities along Cancer Alley are overburdened  with chemical waste facilities, and should be afforded access to clean air, water, and land.
